Performing Arts

These are a few of our performing arts, including the Liberty Cornet Band, the Voices of Appalachia, and the Appalachian Regional Theater.

In the fall of 2024, a group of area singers was brought together by Dr. Brandon Stroup, director, to form Voices of Appalachia (VoA), Adams County’s newest choral ensemble. Founded to provide adults and students in the area an opportunity to perform choral music at a high level, VoA is composed of singers of various backgrounds, united by a desire to make positive contributions to our Appalachian community through music. And, while music can and should be entertaining, this ensemble also strives to provide relevant, meaningful, inspiring concert experiences for musicians and audience members alike; concert experiences that provide hope, joy, comfort, peace, and even challenge our perspectives. The repertoire performed by VoA is meant to demonstrate that music is a language transcending our differences yet accentuating our commonality.
The Liberty Cornet Band was founded in 1900 by Liberty Township Adams Co. farmers, making it the oldest community band in the state and in its 125th year. The original band was founded by German immigrants in Adams County’s Liberty Township, thus the name. The founder was a blacksmith, and the band practiced their music in Fairview on State Route 125 near the Brown County line. They specialize in turn-of-the century marches.
Bringing community theater to the Adams County area was one of the first initiatives the ACAC undertook. They formed the Appalachian Regional Theater and in 2010 the first production, Dearly Departed, was performed in the West Union High School round room. This comedy by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones is set in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt and portrays the beleaguered Turpin family and proves living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. It was directed by one of ACAC’s founding members, Mike Roberts. Since that first play, ART has brought eighteen productions to life, covering the genres of drama, comedy, and dinner theater at various venues throughout the county.
